The eclectic stuart ross - scientist, artist, and visionary commentator, has spent the greater part of his life interpreting social and cultural realities though his work. fusing the worlds of science and art, native new yorker stuart ross began his journey early on, entering in the 1986 duracell scholarship competition at age 15. the international contest required applicants to design and build a battery-powered device. ross’ creation of an electrically coded card that opened a motorized door (similar to today’s hotel key cards) was rewarded with accolades that led to numerous television interviews and a college scholarship from duracell.

whilst at college at the State University of New York at albany, ross began to experiment with installation art, transforming ordinary residences, taverns, and event halls into mood provoking environments that captivated both students and faculty alike. returning to new york city after traveling through over 30 countries, he fathered ross creations, a workshop and art studio in greenwich village.

through his innovative sculpture and photography, stuart ross has analyzed the bittersweet bond between mankind and technology. he exposes the frailties of human relationships and inquires about the suitability of technological advancement on the human condition. much of his work is interactive, creating a rich, multi-sensory experience not often found in two dimensional and static art forms.

Ross is truly a mixed media artist, working in wood, metal, stone, glass, fabric, fire, motors, blowers, lighting, and photography. His stirring photographs often include unique models engulfed in hand crafted backrounds which contain his captivating sculpture and homemade lighting.

when not working on art, stuart ross is a new york city public high school teacher of physics and earth science, most recently receiving the prestigious ‘teacher of the year’ award for his commitment to excellence.

Ross’ artwork has recently been the inspiration for a documentary, “The Survival of the Wildebeest”. The film follows Ross as he prepares for the largest art exhibit of his career in just eighty days. The film has been receiving splendid reviews and The Survival of the Wildebeest was just awarded the “Audience Choice” award at its’ film festival debut.
